10 ways for teens to make money

Why am i doing this?

Hello,

When i was a teen making money was a challenge. I always wanted something new and when a parent refused to buy it, you had to make the money yourself. Lucky for all of you, making money now is much easier now than it was several years ago. So, I've compiled a list of great ways for teens to make money that i am going to share with you!

Do chores

10.)

One way that i made money as a teen that a teen could still do now was doing chores. Now, i know that this isn't the fastest or the most fun way to make money, but after a while the money could really add up and the hard work would really pay off. Here's one thing you could do. Make a chart that lists the days of the week going across the top, left to right, and several chores that you could do running from the top to bottom on the left. Assign every chore an amount of money that seems like a reasonable reward and label each chore with it. For example, set table $0.20, folding laundry $0.50. Then, whenever you complete the chore check of the box under the day that you did it. I experimented with a chart like this and made about 10-15 dollars a week!

Tutoring

9.)

Another good way for teens to make money, particularly over the summer, is tutoring. Now, while teaching over the summer probably isn't your ideal way to spend the vacation, it isn't such a bad idea. When you think about it, parents will want their kids to retain as much information from the previous year as possible, especially if their kid isn't the greatest student. Also, parents will probably pay you sufficiently for the work you did. Try this, think of a school subject or even an instrument that you are really good at, then, hand out flyers around your neighborhood advertising your new business. Make sure to leave your name and contact info on the flyer so anyone who is interested can find you. If you want, you can actually list a modest hourly rate somewhere on your advertisement. I personally have not done this, but i have friends who have and they say that it is a surefire way to make a lot of money over the summer.

Loan money

8.)

One way that i loved to make money as a kid was to loan it. Now, this is only a long term way to make money and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who needs to make a hundred bucks in one week. However, over time, loaning money can be a very successful way to earn cash. Here's how it works. Find a sibling or friend who wants to buy something, but doesn't have the money. Now all you have to do is give it to them, however there is a catch. Say that you lend your brother $30 to buy a video game. You give him, maybe, a month to pay you back, however, when he does, he has to give you $45 dollars. Odds are, your brother or sister will take the deal and if they don't, then just lower the price to maybe $40 dollars. Either way, you will make a decent profit in only about a month. Remember, it takes money to make money!

Sell things on eBay

7.)

I'm sure you all have old junk around your house that you will never use again, but don't want to throw away. Well, one man's trash is another man's treasure! You'd be surprised how many old knick-knacks you have in your house that someone would be willing to pay a lot of money for on eBay. One good thing that you could sell on eBay is sports equipment. Old, but hardly ever used golf clubs or baseball bats are great for selling because you could sell them for much cheaper than store price, even though they are practically new. Also, limited edition items or collectors item are very valuable to some people on eBay. Just remember, never rely solely on eBay to make you a lot of money because many times the item that you put on will not sell.

Have a garage/tag sale

6.)

This is a classic method of making money and is slightly more reliable than eBay. All you need to do is get permission from your parents (only because it would be hard to pull it off without them knowing), find a lot of old belongings in your house that no one wants that other people might, then just put a bunch of signs up around your town giving the date, time, and adress of the garage sale and you're all set! Although this method of selling items will take a lot more effort than simply putting something up on eBay, you are bound to sell more items, faster, and for a higher price. Warning: make sure that you are only selling items that people in your family DON'T WANT, otherwise they're going to be pretty pissed off at you if you sell something they didn't want you to.

Grow a garden

5.)

In these modern times, where people are much more aware of the benefits of eating healthy, many people are sure to take advantage of a chance to buy healthy food. This is where you come in. Make a small garden in your yard with a variety of plant growing, then, pick what you grew and sell it. There are a number of ways that you can sell it, all of which i found to work fairly well. One way is to set up a road side stand and wait there for passing cars. When one comes, ask them if hey would like to buy anything. Another way to do it its to go door to door around your neighborhood selling them to people, however, this can be somewhat awkward, especially if the person says no. The way that i would personally recommend would be to set up a shaded stand on the side of the road with all of your produce and a sign that lists the prices. Make a sign that asks people to use the honor system and to pay for what they buy, even though there is no one at the stand to stop them from stealing.

Shovel snow

4.)

Time to get back to the basics. Shoveling snow is one of the classic money making methods for kids and still works well today. You could shovel your own drive way or make flyers and hand hand them out to neighbors about shoveling their driveways. While it may take a lot of hard work and time, it is a definite keeper for making money. A great group of people to advertise to are the elderly, or anyone else who would have a lot of difficulty shoveling their own driveway. They will gladly take advantage of a chance to let someone else do their hard work for them. A good way to shovel driveways faster and easier is, if you have a driving lawn mower, to mount a plow on the front. Depending on the strength of the mower you will at least be able to plow away some areas of the driveway before having to resort to doing it manually.

Mow lawns

3.)

Another fairly simple way to earn a lot of money over the spring and summer is to mow lawns. Mowing lawns is an annoying hassle for a lot of people, so if they could hire a teen to do it for half the price of one of those services i'm sure that they would jump at the opportunity. As i mentioned many times before, the easiest way to advertise for a small business of yours would be to distribute flyers and that doesn't change now. However, as far as payment i would charge for the size of the lawn, not an hourly payment. This way, even if you have a riding mower and could do it in less than an hour, you could still make just as much money as you would using a push mower. One thing that you have to make sure of is that you have a way of disposing of the grass clippings after you mow the lawn. This is something that people are not going to want to deal with themselves after paying you to cut their lawn. I recommend either getting a lawnmower with a vacuum attached to it or simply using a rake to pile it up, then put it in a garbage bag.

Do yard work

2.)

Yard work is one of the broadest categories of jobs that a teen can have because there are so many different things that you could do. There are yard related jobs for almost every season, you could help plant or maintain gardens in the spring, or water plants in the summer or even rake leaves in the fall. So, when you are advertising for your yard working business make sure not to narrow the possibilities of what kinds of jobs you want to do. Keeping yourself open minded will increase the ways you can make money! However, while this job is a sure way to make a lot of money you have to make sure, in this job especially, that you do a quality job. People are not going to hire you again if you just race through the work to get to the payment.

Hire workers

1.)

Hire workers, expand your business! This is my personal favorite way to make money because it is so easy. Say that you have a lawn mowing business, leaf raking business, and are selling vegetables from your garden. Obviously, you don't have time to perform all of these tasks for your neighbors since, being the teenager you are, are very busy. What you do is hire friends or siblings or friends to do these tasks for you for a percentage of the profits. This way, you could mow a lawn while your brother is raking leaves, your sister is helping your neighbor with planting window boxes, and your friend is selling your garden produce. In this scenario, you get 4 times as much work done and only have to sacrifice about 40% of your profits. Just always treat your employees well because they have many other ways to make money. So, never cheat them with a minor salary, and if possible add a little bit to their cut of the profits just to keep them interested.

Thanks for reading

Well, that pretty much wraps up my hub, but there are still many more ways to make money beyond what I've listed. Anyways, thanks for reading and i hope that i have given you all some good ideas!
